Underfloor Heating Thermostat Problems

Underfloor Heating Thermostat Problems are the most common issue with any underfloor heating, and are, usually, very easily resolved. Most Underfloor Heating Thermostat Problems encountered are normally down to user error and the wrong settings or the floor probe (sensor) has not been fitted correctly.

Before troubleshooting the most common technical faults with the units, let us look at some of the most common users face with Underfloor Heating Thermostat Problems:-

  1. Getting the correct temperature you require – Although this seems obvious many people do not realise that the most effective and efficient way of controlling your underfloor heating system (certainly electric systems) is by using a floor sensor that is located within the floor construction next to the system, this allows the temperature of the heating system to be more accurately controlled. by using a sensor to read the air temperature rather than the floor temperature can be affected by external factors such as sunlight, draughts etc which means your underfloor heating system will either run too hot or too cold.  According to Klima Underfloor Heating, the most common and efficient temperature to set your underfloor heating is between 21 degrees to 26 degrees, depending on the time of year and the type of living space.  Klima Underfloor Heating always recommend controlling each room by their own individual thermostats meaning you have total control over the heat outputs.


  1. Choosing the correct Thermostat – It is important that you choose a thermostat that has a setback temperature control built in and time control settings. Simple on/off thermostats means that your system is either on or off and therefore expensive to run.  Unlike traditional central heating, underfloor heating is not instantaneous heat, therefore an element of heat should always be maintained so that the system is not using a lot of energy and time to heat back to your desired temperature.  The setback facility allows your system to maintain a low level of heat and then heat only as when required.  The touch control thermostat by Floor Heating-Direct is intelligent enough so that the system will start heating early and self-learn how long it takes to heat to your desired temperature meaning the efficiency of the system is greatly increased meaning lower running costs.

Choosing the correct timings – again this may seem obvious, but we recommend that you use a thermostat that has built-in time settings, so you can optimise your heating costs when you are in the property and not when you are out. The initial installation and placement of the thermostats and sensors are important as this will affect ongoing whether you are getting accurate temperature readings and the underfloor heating system can respond correctly to your commands.  Things to take into account is making sure the sensors are not near any other heat sources such as water pipes, spotlights in the ceiling below, direct sunlight or next to a window or door entrance, all of these can affect the temperature and therefore it will become difficult to control your system.
